Walls are not just made alive by wall paintings, murals, or paint. Wallpaper plays a major role in the overall interior of the house. It comes with design that we are left with option if we will leave it as it is or perhaps still adorn the wall with fine arts.

September will be a moth of wallpaper. It comes with different textures, design, materials, and surely of varying cost. The new ones may be costly but the quality is worth every dime.  we can save from paints yet we need to adorn our wall with fine arts. Although we can settle for cheap decors, it would still be better to make our wall bare than looking cheap. Expression in Asian Art

Does religion quite curtail the expression of Asian art? Asia is jam packed with faithful people from different sectors of religions. One country may be a mixture of religions from Christianity to Buddhism yet we know that there is one that dominates each nation. And yes, from this prevailing faith lies the ideology that shaped the culture, tradition, and political history of one’s race.

Wall painting, more than being an ornate to a place is an expression of thoughts and feelings combined. Imagination puts knowledge in the backseat. It can run wild. It is a place in our mind that seems infinite and vast ‘till creativity operates to fill the vastness with visions and powerful emotions. Filling this vastness however is curtailed with factors such as values, inhibition, and moral consideration for others. Given these, in a society where norms and values prevail, with traditions that need to be followed, with culture that asked for warm embrace, expression of art is in no doubt curtailed. Thus, Asian art is expected to blend with all these factors and not these factors submitting or giving in to Asian art.

Religion, no matter what sect, needs to be respected not unless we speak of cults that eat human flesh or kill people as offerings to God. We speak here of religions that talk about philosophy of making the people succumb to good. This message may come in different versions or translations like how one statement of good deed is written in religious books of Christians, Buddhists, Islam, and some other more. However, making a wall painting out of these may not always suggest approval on their teachings and the religious icons that represent them. It is art anyway. It is the artist’s view on his subject. And as audience of these arts, we can tell what is too much and what is just right without tracing law from the constitution that guides the creation or expression of art.

Wall Paintings in a very conservative country can be sexual, violent, or anything pertaining to imperfection and frailty of human beings but targeting the religious icons which people worship, and which people deem as refuge to their tribulations is in no way a sign of moral consideration. It is hitting on icon which people believe as sacred. We are not in a way triggering arguments on religious terms like paganism or blasphemy but just simply moral consideration that has guided and founded the values of the constituents of a nation.

Religious icons are in human form.  Be it a sculpture or a wall painting, portrayed is a human being. Painting this form as disfigured in a very questionable way is unacceptable. We, humans, know what is insulting and mockery without consulting the constitution.

Asian Art and its Expression

Asian countries as we know are bounded to rich culture-- a culture that is shaped by faith and religion. Since time immemorial, each of these religions had influenced the society and we thank them for filling our minds with wisdom and for being a refuge and comfort in times of distress.

Of whether this is psychological or divine, so far religion does not teach anyone of wrong doing. In fact, they helped. People of whether they are believers of a certain religion or no religion at all sin and religion has nothing to do with it. It is the frailty of being human that breaks us and not a religious icon which too is a work of art. Artworks for sale that we see around us can be very suggestive. Why not? Artworks are meant to tickle the senses, to evoke emotion of bliss and sadness, to inspire, and to provoke critical thinking. However, if it is intentionally created to hit or mock someone or something, then it is not an art anymore but a medium to hurt.

 'Say speech, poetry is an art. But our everyday language which is the most expressive of all is not an art. We talk to people over issue or what we want, our views, even the most hateful thing that we feel. In fact, if we compare our daily use of speech to thousands of artworks for sale and discern which one is real expression, then the former will sell big time but it is not art at all which only means not all expressions are art. If a person uses art to inflict pain then they misunderstood what art is. It may be an expression but not art at all. It is very seldom that you find Asian art to be provoking. Many will be mentally provoking which will make you think over a situation but very few will alarm an institution or a society, as a whole. There is no clear demarcation line, in fact, as to what extent an art can use as an expression but as individuals, we know what is not proper. Not in a chance you can use art as your escape goat to mock someone you hate because such art like music will be patronized by people. Just imagine the world will enjoy singing a song which you intend to write to hit a person you hate! And you are proud because it is art. You know for yourself your real intention and what you created is never an art. And most all, it will never be Asian art!

When is expression unjust?

To what extent Asian art can express inner thoughts, belief, and opinions? Images speak so aloud that the viewer can discern what the story behind is all about. Putting a thing to what people can see is actualization of a vision which most of the time is simply brought by imagination or creativity. Say what you must. Write what you must. Choose your medium.

Recently, local art scene in the Philippines was bombarded by two conflicting opinions. From the judgment of many Filipinos founded by the strong influence of culture, tradition, and the dominant influence of Roman Catholicism in the society vis-a- vis national artists who see no issues at all over the most talked artworks publicly displayed. The fight over a controversial art exhibit is triggered by a fight between good and evil. Which delineates evil from good has not anything to do with religion. Our sense of morality and the human judgment to what is good is not always itemized as commandments or laws. Yes, we differ in beliefs. Yet, we know what will hurt other people. Then, say what you must. Write what you must. Choose your medium-- be it wall painting or poetry. Just try not get anyone hurt. Hurting is intentional. We humans know when to hurt others because we know when they hurt us, too. This goes the same as to when we can't inflict pain because chances are pain avenges pain, not unless the retaliation is based on something that is not founded by good judgment.

Creating a distorted or disfigured image of a religious icon for public display is unjustifiable if we speak of moral grounds, or better yet if we speak of consideration to human feelings. We might be against belief on worshipping religious icons. But if one comes to think of it, the ones who desire them damaged are the people who believe more that such icons can make or break them. Religious icons can be made of wood, clay, or just simply painted as an altar piece. Such too are work of art. They did not hit anyone. Not in a chance that one of them extended their arms to poke someone who bowed before them. Simply put, these icons did not inflict pain to anyone in the world. The people who bowed before them sin just like everybody else. They were hit by a society and treated just like how a usual criminal was treated. But what about the rest whose minds and hearts are pure seeking refuge to these icons as the ones to comfort them? They were in pain because the one they love was disrespected, not to mention that the one they love is innocent. Then, what makes it deserve such mockery and insult!

Many people do not believe in ghost. The thought of ghost terrifying an individual is fun to many. Those who didn't believe will in no way be scared that a soul of a dead body comes back to haunt us. The moment they felt terrified over the thought and later on got affected  only insinuates that they too believe but perhaps, just in denial which somehow makes us conclude that the people behind the controversial art are not non-believers but subconsciously were hurting and no one is somewhere around willing to assume the blame. A speech can be damaging. Your words are okay a second ago and in an instant can change to curses due to pain within that won't go. Give or take a minute and you asked the heavens what prompted you to say it. Yes, words when unmasked or uncensored are triggered by emotion. But  an artwork as that of fine arts or other visual arts like wall painting which take a month or more to come up with a theme, design, style, and overall presentation is not in, anyway, triggered by a compulsive emotion but well-framed thoughts which means the people behind such controversial Asian art is in their right frame of minds.

Then we ask when expression unjust? If arts reflect your longing, your pain, or a distraction of yourself, then so be it but if it is damaging to other people, there is a need then to think twice.
